A public lecture by Benedek Csalog

"There are, it seems to me, some faults in our way of writing music which correspond to the manner of writing our language. We write differently than we play: this is the reason that foreigners play our music less well than we play theirs. On the contrary, the Italians write their music in the true values in which they think of it. For example, we dot successive eight notes which follow in step-wise motion. However, we write them equally. Our usage has served us well and we continue in it."

Francois Couperin in his harpsichord-method (L'Art de toucher le clavecin,1717)
